Starting and completing your application as soon as possible is the best idea. Application opens end of May and closes in September. You are notified of the decision in mid-October. Afterwards, the coordinators of the program do the technical work and you will fill out forms to be registered into the UT system.
Yes, partially. During your application process you are asked to choose 5-7 labs that interest you as well as indicate the field you would like to study. You are guaranteed to work in your field of interest. The coordinators will do their best to match you up with your top choice lab.
A lot of things are paid for when you are in the program. You will receive FREE parking hangtags (if you have a UTD parking sticker), and your poster will be paid for. Not to mention your $4,000. You also get a free t-shirt from the program. There will be free lunches hosted by Dr. Ravnik. Throughout the semester you will have the opportunity to attend seminars and lectures to learn about projects in other labs and departments. These are a great source of additional knowledge as well as free pizza or sandwiches. Finally, nothing is more beneficial than the work you do in the lab itself. Learning to think critically and applying it to the big picture will be useful in any career you pursue.
If you aren't liking your lab work, the best thing to do is to give it a couple weeks. At first, you will be trained in protocols and procedures and may not have gotten to the exciting part of your research! If you are still not happy, make sure you let Dr. Ravnik know as soon as possible to work something out.
Your first priority is research as a Green Fellow. As part of your Green Fellow Agreement, you will not be allowed to shadow doctors or visit medical clinics.
Yes, you will receive 12 research credits under NATS, NSC, or PSY coursework. This is usually worked out with your UTD mentor (NSM: Dr. Michael Biewer, BBS: Dr. Melanie Spence) who inputs the grade for the course. Additionally, your lab PI may also be asked to provide feedback, so make sure to do well! Many students utilize a portion of their research credits towards a major-related advanced writing class, which may be required. The requirement for this "senior thesis" is typically to write a scientific report over your research project. Make sure that your graduation plans remain on track or plan accordingly because Green Fellows uses a semester of AES scholarship (if applicable)! Other Helpful Notes: NSM Students: You will be required to provide a summary report to Dr. Biewer regarding your research project during the fellowship for mid-term grades at UTD. BBS Students: Once you have been accepted by the program and you accept your position, you will be required to meet with BBS Advising once your enrollment appointment for the spring semester is open. Once lab matching results have been finalized, you will need to email Dr. Spence ([email protected]) with the name of your PI (Principal Investigator) & the PI's contact information (e.g. lab location, lab phone #, etc.).
Students are responsible for their tuition for the spring semester while participating in the fellowship. Each fellow receives a $4,000 stipend which will be applied towards the tuition through Financial Aid.
Yes! However, there will be several more steps before beginning research at UT Southwestern. Please use the 2 documents attached at the bottom of the page to guide you in this process only AFTER you have been accepted for the Green Fellowship.
Make sure to follow up with your recommenders! Once you submit your application, you and your recommenders should receive a confirmation email within 2 business days. If not, please email [email protected].
